In Division 1 of the Suffolk Senior League, Sledgehammers clinched the title with two games still to play when they won on the road at Lasers. Cougars kept their recent good run going with a win at Bulldogs to give themselves a good chance of runners-up spot.
Sledgehammers had the better of the opening exchanges against Lasers thanks to 14 first-quarter points from Bert Scott. Going into the second, Lasers trailed by 12 but they reduced this to 8 by half time with Ethan Dixon hitting 11. Early in the third, Sledgehammers hit 10 unanswered points to give themselves something of a cushion and by the end of the quarter they had extended their lead to 16. Only 3 field goals in the next 6 minutes from Lasers gave them too much to do as Sledgehammers made sure the league trophy stays in Brightlingsea for at least another year.
Undefeated in 2010, Cougars kept their chances alive of a runners-up spot when they comfortably saw off Bulldogs’ challenge. Early in the first they hit 11 points without reply and never looked back. They led by 14 at the end of the quarter and extended the lead to more than 20 by half-time. Only Billy Smith could offer any resistance from the Bulldogs as he finished with a game-high 38, but such was Cougars’ superiority that 7 of the squad finished in double-figures.
There is still everything to play for at the top of Division 2 and Kings kept themselves in contention with a home win against Cannons. The visitors struggled from the start and only managed 2 field goals in the opening quarter by which time Kings were up by more than 20 helped by 14 personal from Rob Randall. The gap widened to over 30 by half time and although Cannons improved in the third, there was too much ground to make up. Nick Kricka helped himself to 19 second-half points for the Kings while only Glen Barnes managed double figures for the visitors.
